Where do vegans get their protein?

In this year, this is still a widely asked question and a common misconception that consuming a vegan diet will lead to undernourishment, deficiencies, and not enough protein.

Many athletes and average people are under the impression that the most important macro-nutrient to consume in order to experience great performance, grow bigger muscles, and lose fat is protein. While protein is important for muscular growth, performance, fat loss, and health, if you overly focus on this one category to the exclusion of others, you'll be missing out on a wide variety of flavors, vitamins, micronutrients, and joy. An excess amount of what your body needs for your particular goals and body type can be detrimental to your health. What you choose to eat does make a difference in your energy, health, beauty, and athletic experience.

As your coach, I'll help clarify any misinformation you have about food, veganism, supplements, and the fitness industry. I have been independently studying nutrition since 2007 after foregoing my plan to become a Registered Dietitian and I'm still passionate about learning. In 2018 I received a Plant-Based Certificate from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies (CNS) and eCornell. My personal journey with nutrition and experience working with vegetarian/vegan and non-vegetarian clients has provided me a lot of insight into what women need to consume in order to maintain a healthy body weight and composition while building muscle.

Personally, I've evolved from being a very picky eater as a child consuming mainly animal products, processed foods, and carbs/grains (the Standard American Diet and Afro-Caribbean diet) to a "health-conscious" young adult (think lean meats, whole grains, fruits, low-fat dairy) to a short-term pescatarian to a clueless vegetarian (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches) to "gym-rat vegan" (lots of meat substitutes, soy products and protein shakes) to happily consuming a mostly Whole Foods Plant-Based vegan diet. It's been a decade long journey!

I believe in helping you discover the right foods and creating a diet plan with you for your particular needs and energy demands that will feel nourishing and non-restrictive.
